Making the case for an integrated asset manager

Oct 20, 2026

As the alternatives market consolidates and boundaries between public and private markets continue to blur, we believe the case for choosing an integrated asset manager has never been stronger.

Key takeaways:

  • Total portfolio thinking is redefining alternatives allocation: As public and private markets converge, investors increasingly need integrated total-portfolio solutions supported by unified manager relationships, not just a specialist or diversified label.
  • Potential to unlock more benefits than scale alone: These benefits include richer ideas through shared research across teams, institutional-grade risk management without losing agility, and a single client relationship instead of many.
  • Look for evidence: Confirm a consistent track record across capabilities, shared research on one desk, a single client relationship, and consistent governance and transparency.

Why integration matters in a consolidating alternatives market

The alternatives market is changing, and with it, what investors need to look for in an alternatives manager is changing too.

Where historically the choice would have been between an alternatives specialist and a more diversified manager, convergence between public and private markets has changed the rules. This shift is reshaping what a results-driven alternatives management strategy looks like.

We believe that for genuine integrated total-portfolio solutions to deliver for investors, manager capabilities need to truly work together, and at all levels across the investment platform. This demands an integrated platform that is built for where the market is going, not one for how things used to work.

What’s driving this shift in alternatives?

Investors are increasingly demanding total-portfolio solutions – alternatives coordinated with broader allocation, not managed in isolation. In turn, managers need to be capable of considering alternatives alongside traditional investment strategies and whole-portfolio objectives.

There are other drivers too. Better operational efficiency, where a single relationship can support unified reporting and reduce governance complexity. Better access, where scale can unlock counterparty, issuer, and policymaker relationships in a way that fragmented manager rosters cannot. And better-informed investing, as public and private boundaries blur and managers follow issuers across their life cycle.

What have alternatives specialists historically offered?

From our perspective, alternatives specialists have delivered clear strengths in a once-siloed market. They brought:

  • Alternatives-specific experience: deep focus and experience navigating alternatives-specific market events.
  • Networks: established industry networks, tailored to niche deal flow.
  • A breadth of alternatives: the agility to pursue smaller, idiosyncratic opportunities.

These strengths remain important, but the market has changed, and that means the solutions that clients need, and the platforms required to deliver them, have changed too.

The question now is whether these specialist characteristics can be combined with the advantages of a broader platform. In practice, that means retaining a specialist investment focus while giving portfolio managers access to a wider range of investment teams, resources and capabilities.

In our view, a manager’s goal should not be scale for its own sake, but instead to create the foundations for an integrated investment framework that is fit for purpose.

What can true integration deliver?

True integration that connects alternatives and traditional long-only investment teams on one platform offers the following potential benefits:

  • Richer idea generation: shared research across sub-asset class teams leading to a broader hunting ground for opportunities. For example, top-down macroeconomic specialists providing rates context or bottom-up microeconomic insights from company analysts can help create a more complete investment picture.
  • Broader perspective: this is particularly relevant when combining public and private expertise in one integrated platform. The ability to draw on consistent analyst coverage and existing issuer relationships allows teams to better track, assess, and act on opportunities as opportunities shift across the credit spectrum.
  • Institutional infrastructure: risk management, governance and reporting built to the highest standards across the full book.
  • Scale with access: large-platform resources that can support specialist teams without sacrificing team-level agility.
  • Partnership depth: one platform with the potential to offer a wider range of client solutions. For example, deeper capabilities that can span liquid, unconstrained and private markets in emerging markets say.
  • Whole portfolio co-ordination: the ability to manage alternatives in the context of clients’ wider portfolio exposures reduces multiple manager-client contacts and delivering a simpler, more efficient relationship.

How do you distinguish real integration from marketing hype?

Real integration is not just talking the talk but walking the walk. As more managers present themselves as offering integrated platforms, investors need to look beyond the label and understand what sits underneath it. That means not only knowing what to look for, but spotting the red flags too.

What should investors look for? A consistent track record across capabilities, built and tested over market cycles. Teams that work on the same desk, sharing research and investment processes. A unified distribution model through a single client relationship. And consistent standards of governance and transparency, whether that is delivering on alternatives or more traditional long-only strategies.

The red flags – what should investors avoid? Some managers might seek integration through acquisitions, but recent M&A can still leave teams working in silos. If managers cannot demonstrate idea generation flowing across teams, if client coverage rotates by product, if alternatives transparency is lower – these are all warning signs. The risk is that clients are left with still-siloed thinking and a string of transactions – not a unified, integrated relationship.

Where is alternatives management heading?

In a consolidating market, choosing the right integrated investment manager matters. It means choosing a manager capable of combining scale, access and institutional infrastructure with genuine integration and team-level agility.

It means choosing a manager that can go beyond the marketing claims and demonstrate collaboration in practice. Put simply, the right manager is one that can successfully answer two questions that clients will be asking: “How do your teams actually work together?” and “Can you show me?”
